Economics Certification for Teachers
for teachers with a Broad Field Social Studies License (701)


To obtain certification in economics, a teacher should have an institution that is approved for economics certification evaluate previous course work. The teacher must then meet the institution's requirements for eligibility for the license. In addition to required course work, teachers will be required to take the Broad Field Social Studies Praxis II test.

A study of the analytical core and the central issues of the measurement and determination of the level of national income, fluctuations, and nation growth. Fiscal and monetary policy effects on unemployment and inflation are examined. (Sp) Pr Prer erequisite: Economics 125.

101 Principles of Microeconomics 4 credits

The rise and expansion of market economies, and the principles of microeconomic behavior. Topics include an introduction to economic methodologies, the ideas and institutions of the microeconomy, consumer behavior, the business firm and market structure, labor and capital markets, and government policies affecting resource allocation and the distribution of income.

102 Principles of Macroeconomics 4 credits

An introduction to the principles and issues of the national economy, and the institutions of macroeconomic behavior. Topics include the role of government in a mixed market economy; measuring and determining national income; money and the banking system; and the public policies available for achieving full employment, price stability, and continuing economic growth in modern industrial and democratic societies. Prerequisite: Economics 101 or consent of the instructor.

103 Issues in Economics 4 credits

This course offers students an introduction to economics, along with some elementary tools of economic analysis, with emphasis upon their application to contemporary problems and issues. The economy and selected issues are examined in their global context. Designed to meet the needs and interests of students in various majors outside of the economics and business administration areas, the course is not open to students who have received credit for either Economics 101 or Economics 102.

251 Intermediate Microeconomics 4 credits

The economic theory of microeconomic units: consumers, firms, and industries. This entails the study of production, cost, and price theory, and the practices of firms under alternative market structures. Conceptions of social welfare will be explored, and the uses and limits of public policy in addressing the problems of market failures will be examined.

Prerequisite: ECON 101 or 103.

252 Intermediate Macroeconomics 4 credits

The economic theory of macroeconomic aggregates: national income accounting; the determinants of output, income, and employment levels; the analysis of inflation; processes of economic growth; and open-economy macroeconomics. Monetary, fiscal, and incomes policies are examined and the uses and limits of these tools in promoting macroeconomic goals are discussed. Prerequisite: ECON 102 or 103.

333 Applied Statistics for Economics and Management 4 credits

The application of statistics to problems in business and economics, encompassing the gathering, organization, analysis, and presentation of data. Topics include descriptive statistics in tabular and graphical forms; the common measures of central tendency and dispersion; sampling and probability distributions; construction of confidence intervals and hypothesis testing; and correlation analysis. Prerequisite: Math 105 or equivalent.

120 Global Macroeconomics 3 credits

Introduction to the functioning of the world economy. Applications of economic principles to domestic and international problems with an introduction to economic systems, economic thought, and economic history around the world. General topics include: the economics of international trade and exchange rates, global macroeconomics, international monetary systems, and economic development. 


202 Contemporary Global Issues 3 credits

This course will offer a contemporary multi-disciplinary perspective regarding the major issues and trends confronting the global society as it enters the 21st century. Emphasis will be given to a critical review and assessment of the origin and present condition of the plethora of situations and problems affecting modern global society. The student will also learn to critically evaluate current and future events. The course will incorporate the views and approaches of the following disciplines: sociology/anthropology, economics, geography, political science and history. (Cross-listed with ANT/ECO/GEO/POL/ SOC/HIS 202; may only earn credit in one department.) Offered occasionally.

Economics Minor

The Economics minor requires a minimum of 24 credits. Complete the courses required for the Economics major (below) and additional credits (if needed) to total 24 credits. A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 is required, based on all Economics minor course work taken on the UW-Madison campus.

Economics Major

Complete a minimum of 34 credits. The credits required for program admission must be chosen from courses listed under this heading. At least 15 credits of upper level major course work (numbered 300-699) must be taken in residence on the UW-Madison campus. Find course descriptions and course prerequisites in the Letters and Science section of the Undergraduate Catalog. Students completing the Economics major must complete at least one semester of calculus. Mathematics course work may be applied toward the liberal studies requirement.

  • Statistics 3-4 credits. Choose either Econ 310 Measurement in Economics, 4; one of Stats 224, 301, 309, 311, 313, Gen Bus 303; or an approved substitute.
  • Additional credits to total 34 selected in consultation with the undergraduate advisor in the
