Youth Enterprise Academy: 
A summer program for Milwaukee Public School 9th & 10th Grade Students

Leadership, Economics and Personal Finance

The Youth Enterprise Academy will provide students the skills needed to be successful in high school and beyond.  The academy will focus on the steps students can take to become an economic success.  This 9 day summer program introduces students to how our free market economy works and individual roles within the economy.  Talented and knowledgeable teachers will explain how the economic choices students make today can influence their chances for future success.

  • Beginning to save for their future with a $500 U.S. Savings Bond
  • Learning about saving and credit
  • Exploring the world of investing
  • Learning how our economy works
  • Meeting successful business people and hearing their advice

  • Tips on how to prepare for college while you are in high school
  • Principles of personal investing:  spending, saving, credit, forms of investing
  • Analyze corporations to decide whether to buy, hold, or sell their stock
  • Overview of how our market economy works
  • Introduction to the economic way of thinking
  • Guest speakers from Milwaukee area businesses
  • Field trip to the Chicago Federal Reserve and Chicago Board of Trade

We are seeing young people who wish to be successful academically and economically.  Each student who attends all sessions, is an active participant and completes all assignments will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond.

Application Deadline

Please complete the requested information and return it no later than April 15.  You will be notified  regarding your application.  A parent orientation will be held on the UWM campus.

Application Process

Admission to the Youth Enterprise Academy is limited and competitive.  Apply now!  You must currently be a 9th or 10th grade student in the Milwaukee Public Schools to qualify.   The following information must be included in your application:

6. Grade
7. Age
8. Ethnic Heritage
9. Report Card

10. Essay -
Write a two paragraph essay addressing why you would like to participate in the Youth Enterprise Academy.  Explain why you are interested in being successful in school and in your community.  Please mention any special interests you might have in business. Neatness and spelling count!

11. References - Please provide us with the names of two people who can serve as references.  You may wish to include a teacher, employer or community leader who knows you.
